A spanner / wrench is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn objects — usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts — or keep them from turning.
Because a “ratchet wrench” allows one to apply force to a threaded fastener causing the fastener (usually a nut or a bolt) to turn, its purpose is primarily that of any wrench (used to tighten or loosen the fastener.)
